The Boundary
Street house has been a challenge. Built on a steeply sloping
lot, with serious drainage issues, it has become one of our most
interesting gardens. Our clients call it their Sino-Tuscan house,
and its terra cotta brick and courtyards immediately suggested
a Tuscan theme. The steep entry garden relies on large masses
of grasses and shrubs, both evergreen and deciduous, to cover
the harsh slopes. A pathway through to the back courtyard evolved
from the need for extensive drainage the path is actually
a wide and deep French drain covered with round river stones.
The clients here love dramatic color and shapes and every room
in the house looks out onto a different scene.
